We recently had the privilege of delivering a CPD presentation for the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT) as part of their 43 Series. Richard and Bryan led an insightful session on specification writing and best practices, highlighting the crucial role specifications play in the design process.
Key Topics Covered
- What is a Specification? Understanding its role in project development.
- Specification Formats for Global Projects Exploring different types and their applications.
- Procurement and Design Responsibility Clarifying roles in the specification process.
- Architectural General Requirements A breakdown of essential considerations.
- Drawing Integration Ensuring specifications and drawings work in tandem.
- Specification Principles & Risk Management Best practices for reducing project risks.
The Importance of Specification Writing
With an engaged audience of approximately 130 CIAT members, emphasised the importance of prioritising specification writing alongside drawing production. A well-structured specification ensures clarity, mitigates risks, and streamlines project execution.
We also discussed the Design Responsibility Matrix (DRM) and its role in defining Prescriptive and Descriptive elements. This approach helps manage Contractor Design Portions and specialist sub-contractor responsibilities effectively.
Another key takeaway was the importance of reducing extensive specification notes on drawings. Instead, we recommend linking drawings, schedules, and specifications using reference tags. This method encourages contractors to review all project documentation cohesively, ensuring a more integrated approach to design and construction.
We are grateful to CIAT for the opportunity to share our expertise and to all attendees for their participation. Educating industry professionals on best practices in specification writing is an essential part of improving standards across the architectural and construction sectors.
